This was a time in my life, that i’ll never forget. It helped me become the person I am today. It’s crazy something can seem like it happened yesterday, but happened so long ago. It was a very snowy day in Denver, Colorado with temperatures way below freezing. I was around 10 or 11 years old at the time and so full of life. I had no idea about the horrible day my family was in for. I walked out of my house and saw my father wiping snow off the windshield of his Ford Explorer, and my mother packing the car with a bunch snacks for the road. We were set to drive to my grandfather’s house in Des Moines, Iowa. I was so excited because I haven’t seen my grandparents in years and we had so much planned that I could barely stand still. We were going over their for Christmas and a little much needed time away. We loaded up in the car, got some gas and some breakfast, and we hit the road. Being around a 12 hour drive, my mother and father took shifts driving the car. It was my dads shift first and my mother and I, decided to play I-Spy out the car window. Everything was going as planned and it’s crazy how much fun I was having just sitting in the car. I remember the roads getting super bad, so we stopped to get some dinner and wait out the storm a little bit. A couple hours past, and we decided this is good as the weather is going to get. My dad being very tired, my parents decided to switch drivers and let my mom drive. I myself was getting very sleepy, and ended up falling asleep the same time my dad did. At least a couple hours past, and I was awaken by a scream from my mother. I open my eyes and noticed that we are sliding on the ice and my dad was screaming “ Amy, whatever you do don’t slam on the brakes”. My mother was already scared to drive in the snow, and you could probably guess what happened next. She slammed on the brakes. The car took its first flip and I remember being more scared than I ever have been. Everything in the car was flying all over the place, the windows were shattering and the outside of the car was starting to cave in. The car continued to roll nine times. The roof sunk in so much you could barely move. Somehow, by the grace of God, not me, my mother, or my father had any serious injuries. I will never forget what the police chief said when he arrived. “Praise the lord, I thought I was walking up to a car with a bunch of dead people. You should be very thankful”. This was a moment in my life that shaped me to become the man I am today, because it taught me that every day could be your last and to live each one like it is.
