She walked to school on the sunny morning. It was finally the last day. The sky was a vibrant shade of light blue. The flowers were beginning to bloom as if they were being born again. “Good morning flowers,” the girl said. The smell of the daisies filled the air. It was a perfect day. As she arrived at the schoolyard she was greeted by her group of friends. They were all dressed the same as if they were triplets, but she was not informed of this occasion. “Fake friends,” she muttered under her breath, so no one could hear her. Everyone knew they were too old to dress the same. They always did these things without her, as though she was just for decoration. As she pondered on this thought, he arrived, the only boy in the world who she truly loved. They grew up together, but she seemed to slowly fade from his memory like a childhood birthday party. His light hair seemed to shine in the sunlight; their eyes met for one quick moment, but that was enough for her heart to skip a beat. He never really noticed her, just like her friends, she was just decoration, maybe even invisible. As he passed through the schoolyard, he was met by the most popular girl in school. They were in love. Everyone could tell. The way her spunky blonde, curly hair bounced in the sunlight and her big brown eyes seemed to mesmerize him, as if he were under a spell. Who wouldn’t love her? She was perfect. Oh! How she longed to be with him again. Her body seemed to turn green with envy as she watched them pawn over each other. Why wasn’t she good enough for him? She twitched in agony as she gazed at them. Why was life so hard for her? She would never get her fairytale ending like her mother used to read to her, before she died. The girl could feel the tears yearning to come out, but she would never let anyone see her cry. Her throat started to burn with every swallow she took. “Get a hold of yourself,” the girl said. “Now is not the time,” she added. The girl took a deep breath, flipped her long hair out of her face, and headed into the school for the last day of torture.
After school ended, she walked home alone. Her friends normally went with her, but she didn’t want to be around them anymore. The afternoon was hot and sunny. Not a cloud was in the sky. The gentle breeze rushed through her dark blonde hair. The trees were swaying as if they were dancing to the songs of God. Many people were walking home from school, to work in the fields. As she walked along the dirt road, many thoughts swarmed around inside her brain like a hive of bees. She thought to herself, “Will I ever find happiness?” Once again she reminded herself that she was too strong to give up. As she pondered once again, a man approached her with a swaying motion. The beer bottle he had dangled from his hand like a little girl’s baby doll. He reeked of liquor and sadness. “Smile, sweetheart!” the drunken man said. “ I do not feel like smiling at the moment, sir. ” the girl replied and started to walk away when she felt something strong wrap around her arm. She spun around as fast as a tornado to see what had grabbed her only to see the man staring at her in rage. “No one walks away from me!” the man screamed. Many people across the road heard him and stopped to see what was happening. “ I just want to go home, sir. Maybe you should go home too,” the girl said calmly. Although, she was terrified of what this man was capable of. The drunken man looked angrier than he was before. He aimed for her head and started to swing the empty beer bottle, when a policewoman came to assist her. The officer put the drunken man into her car and headed over to the girl. She had tears streaming down her face. “I am so sorry you had to go through this. If I hadn’t of stepped in, who knows what he could have done,” The officer said. “Oh, I’m fine. Just don’t let him get out.” She replied with a small chuckle. “You have my word,” the policewoman said kindly. The girl nodded and turned to look at the police car. The drunken man was staring straight at her like she was an act in the circus. She quickly spun around and proceeded on her lonely walk home. She was in so much shock she didn’t even realize it when she made it to her secret spot, the large oak tree overlooking a pond in a valley. The mountains in the back made this beautiful place look fake, like everyone at her school. She started to climb the large tree to her special branch that she always went to when she realized there was a tall, dark haired, blue eyed boy staring back at her. “Who, who are you?” the girl stuttered. The boy replied, “I was going to ask you the same question.” “You are in my spot.” The girl replied. “There is room for the both of us.” The blue-eyed boy smirked. “Please leave.” The girl snapped. She was getting impatient, for it had been a rough day. “Just come sit.” the boy requested. “Oh all right.” The girl could not deny, she was intrigued by the handsome boy sitting in front of her. They both sat there on the tree branch for what felt like hours, but it had only been minutes before the boy spoke. “What is wrong? An intelligent girl like you should not be so unhappy,” the boy said. “Everyone at school has turned against me, and I hate being told how to act and what to look like just because I am a girl,” the girl replied. “Man you got it tough don’t ya? My father has been working every day and night to support me since my mother died of the disease last year. I am alone most of the time so I come here to think and pray.” The girl looked into his eyes and noticed he looked broken inside, like her. The girl thought to herself for a moment. She pinned a piece of her hair behind her ear to get it out of her face. “My goodness, you have the most exquisite hair I have ever seen in my entire life!” the boy exclaimed. “Thank you, no one has ever said that to me before.” The girl replied. “Really? You are most certainly welcome.” The handsome boy said with a smile on his face. The two talked for hours and hours about their lives and nature. It was as if they had been friends for years. The girl stood up to see if she could get a better view of the pond, but as she did, she slipped and fell off the branch. She felt something wrap around her arm and squeeze it tightly. She looked up to see what had happened when she saw a beautiful pair of bright blue eyes staring back at her. “Don’t worry I wont let you fall!” the boy yelled. The wind started to blow through the branches and the tree branch shook. They both heard a loud “CRACK” and within seconds, they were both soaking wet in the pond. The boy never let go of the girl’s arm, so they were still connected to each other. They both looked at each other in shock until the both started laughing. “You never let go,” the girl stated in laughter. She hadn’t laughed in years. “I’m a man of my word,” he replied. They both could not stop laughing until the blue-eyed boy splashed the girl with the murky water in the face, asking for a fight. They both started splashing and splashing without a care in the world. Soon they grew tired of the game and decided on a truce. “We should probably get out of the water so we don’t catch a cold,” the boy insisted. “Race you there!” the girl yelled for she already started swimming to the bank. “Hey, no fair!” the boy exclaimed as he tried to catch up to her. Once they both got onto the warm green grass full of little white flowers the girl started to shiver. The boy then realized he left his dark green jacket below the tree and went to grab it. The girl looked up at the sky as it was changing colors and saw a colorful mockingbird soaring above the pond. As soon as he arrived back to the beautiful shivering girl, he wrapped his warm jacket around her and looked into her eyes. “Wow,” the blue-eyed boy stated. “What is it?” the girl asked nervously. “I have never met anyone as extraordinary as you my entire life,” he said. The girl had no idea what to say so she just stood there blushing and in awe of his words. No one had ever noticed how truly remarkable the girl was. She might have been different from the most popular girl in school, but they were both beautiful. Flowers are beautiful, but so are sunsets and they look nothing alike. The boy then realized why she hadn’t said anything and took this opportunity. He felt like they were meant for each other. Like both of their loves led up to this exact moment. The boy grabbed her hands and pulled her closer to him. She looked into his light blue eyes and saw his affection for her in them. She never felt this way before. They were both so lost in the moment that they didn’t even realize the beautiful sunset behind them. The mixture of purple, pink, orange, and blue was just magnificent. It looked as though God painted the sky just for this moment just between them. He slipped his hand into hers and they both moved together as if they were one person. “We should do this again sometime don’t ya think?” said the girl. “Yes, this was amazing,” said the boy as they walked away from the field, the tree, the pond, and the branch floating in the water that was now flooding with new memories of two outsiders that had no hope, no friends, no nothing. But they now had each other and that was enough.
