Walking down a lonely road, cold, gastly, and gray, the Moon shone on my back, casting a long, slender shadow across the cobblestone path. I was lightly trodding homeward bound, enrobed in her luminous robe so fair, ignoring the grisly sky that almost swallowed the stars themselves. I knew in the comfort of her face I would ne’er stumble or slip.
But as I walked across the moonlit stones, the shadow that loyally went before me rose up rebelliously, taking a shape so alien… a form no longer bound to the ground! It stared at me with eyes gleaming green, and chuckled with its fanged mouth, so sinister and hollow! It’s amorphous form, no longer in my likeness at all, hissed with its purple, forked tongue flicking out: “Do not be alarmed, long-life companion. It is you who you see, the Dark Side of You, the one you have hid for far too long! Day after day I have tried to turn you into this hidden side for all to see! But neigh, you kept me caged with your petty kindness, and left me to boil over in your mind while you fought to seal my prison! I now will show you who you really are, despite of the light that shines upon you!”
Then with a shriek from his unearthly throat, his form enrobed my body and soul, entrancing me in a state of Hell. He showed me every failure of my past, demonstrated the mistakes that I repeatedly made, lectured me on how I would never improve, or escape from the guilty pain that chained my spirit’s being. He went further to show me at all the times my loved ones were angry with me, even when I tried hard to be the lowly, lovely girl I yearned to be. He convinced me I was hated and forlorn forever, and destined to be banned from Heaven’s bliss. He finally led me to the Mountain of Suicide, where he commanded me to plunge off to my death. “You are going to Hell, anyway. Why prolong your life? It won’t make a difference. Your God has disowned you, hates you, and can’t wait to see you gone!”
My past proved it, my ugly body confirms it; I am waisting my time living here! Tears stinging my blemished and bruised cheeks, I edged toward the precipice, to cast myself in the muck where I believed I belonged. But as closed my eyes to jump, I was stopped by a woman’s voice from behind: “My dear, what are you doing? Are you going to break my heart for the lies you have been told? Have you forgotten the times we spent sparkling nights together? I delighted in clothing you in my luminous robe so bright, while you thanked God for me as a guide at night. Just because you have a dark side doesn’t mean it is really you; I myself have a dark side, but choose to let my Brother Sun showcase the light I am. Let God illuminate your good heart and drown your darkness in light!”
Then I turned and saw the Moon shining on my face, casting the shadowy fiend behind me, forcing him to follow me forever, ne’er again preceding me. Now I always walk facing the light, to keep my past where it belongs: in its own Hell.
