I had to admit that during the next few days, I found my thoughts drifting off towards Nick Brownstein. I kind of hoped to see him again so that I could find out more about him. It was clear from our previous evening together, that he was a good friend of the family’s.
I got my chance by the end of the month. Samantha had asked him to come over again so that she would not have to spend that much extra time without Zack at the office. I gave them a few hours to finish up their work before wandering into the living room. Samantha was just heading into the kitchen to make tea for everyone as I sat down. We exchanged pleasantries. Conversationally, I asked him about his job. It turned out that he had only recently been named partner at the law firm after several years of grueling work both in and out of court. Samantha had really been a mentor for him. He had graduated from an ivy league law school in New York. I told him about how we had that background in common. I also elaborated on some of the work I do with Zack. He took genuine interest in Zack’s well-being. I found myself relaxed in Nick’s company.
Suddenly, he grew quiet. When he looked at me again, he asked, “Jessica, would you like to go out with me sometime, maybe to dinner?” I didn’t expect our conversation to go in this direction, so I was a bit taken aback, although I was interested. He must have sensed my hesitation. “I already asked Samantha if it would be alright to ask Zack’s teacher out, if that’s what you’re worried about,” he spoke looking nervous. I realized that I hadn’t given him an answer yet, so I quickly agreed.
I must say that I masked my excitement extremely well for the rest of the evening. On the inside, I felt like a squealing school girl!
This was a great story. I like how it kept me wondering what would happen next and then a surprised, beautiful ending.
Thanks, I hope to write the rest soon!
