Cavemen invented a lot of things. In fact, I’m pretty sure they created every sport. This is the story of how soccer began.
Tark, the oldest and wisest cave man, had found a perfect place to live with his brothers. It was a large cave at the bottom of tall mountain that opened up to beautiful valley. A small river ran through the valley, with another mountain range off in the distance. Their cave faced east, and he loved to watch the sun rise each morning and light the valley below. He and his brothers spent most days, gathering food and water.
Meric was the next oldest. He loved adventure and was not afraid of much. Then there was Dayden. Dayden was very good at making things and solving problems. He often made many useful tools and always came up with good plans. Willan was the youngest. He loved to laugh, and always seemed to make his brother smile.
On just another day, the brothers planned to go gather food. Today was different, as Tark wanted to try a new place. He had been watching the birds over the past few days. He noticed each morning before the sun rise the birds flew over the valley towards some mountains they had not explored. He would then watch as they returned later in the day, carrying heaps of fruit back to their nests. He was sure there was a lot of good fruit not too far away.
Meric and Willan were up and ready to go quickly. Tark lead the way as they started toward the mountain. They carried their bags to gather fruit and, of course, their clubs. Cave men always needed to be ready to defend themselves. It was a dangerous world out there.
Tark kept a fast pace trying to keep up with the birds. The four walked quietly through the valley making their way to a place they had never explored. They walked for nearly 2 hours. Tark stopped suddenly. Meric and Dayden froze in place. However, Wilan had his head down, kicking a rock. He ran right into Dayden, who looked back with a mean scowl. As they all sat quietly, Tark listened. He could hear something but he was not quite sure what it could be. Cavemen had to be especially careful. There were many creatures that would think the cavemen would make a good meal.
Tark started to walk forward slowly, nearing the top of a small hill. He found where all the birds were going. As he got to the top, he motioned for his brothers to come up. As they all reached Tark, they saw a beautiful valley full of berries, trees and a small stream. They knew they had found somewhere special.
Meric and Tark worked together gathering apples from a tree. Meric climbed to the top and tossed the apples down to Tark. Dayden and Willan found some raspberry bushes and began to fill their packs. Willan stuffed a handful in his mouth and smiled at Dayden. Dayden laughed and kept picking berries. Willan swallowed the berries and looked around. He saw a giant blackberry bush. It was his favorite!! He ran to it and started eating as many as he could.
Meric stoped picking apples for a moment to look around. He saw Dayden picking rasperries, a group of peach trees a ways away. He kept looking, to find Willan. He spotted him picking blackberries. He also spotted something that Willan did not see. The bush was next to a giant cave. Meric knew Willan may be in trouble.
Meric quickly climbed down and got Tark and Dayden. They started toward Willan. As Willian saw them coming he yelled for them to come up. They all froze when they heard a large growl come out of the cave.
Slowly, a giant bear started to come out of the cave. Tark knew that if they all were together they may be able to fight off the bear, but they were too far away to help Willan. Willan stood still, trying to think of what to do. He knew he couldn’t out run the bear and had left his club next to Dayden. He was stuck.
Tark and Meric yelled at the bear, which made it stop but not go back. It again started slowly coming out of the cave, toward Willan. As the bears head stuck out of the cave, Dayden saw another animal close by. It was a skunkadillo. Cavemen usually avoided them because their spray smelled really bad. When the skunkadillo heard the growl, it had curled up in a ball.
Dayden knew he couldn’t run fast enough to get help Willan, and he knew he couldn’t throw anything that would turn the bear back. He kicked the skunkadillo as hard as he could toward the bear. It was a perfect shot!! The skunkadillo landed just inside the cave, next to the bear. When the skunkadillo landed, it unrolled and seeing the cave bear let out a terrible stink spray. The bear ran away as fast as he could. The cavemen cheered and the skunkadillo slowly walked away.
From then on, the cave men weren’t scared of the cave bears, as long as there was a skunkadillo around. If they saw a cave, they would find a skunkadillo, kick it inside and let is spray the bear out. It got to be fun to kick the ball into the cave, and overtime, the game of soccer was started. And that is how the game of soccer began.
