The songs spotify has recommended me this month: I don’t do Boys, Girls Like Girls, Only a Girl, and Honey by Kehlani, which if you don’t know, is the gayest song ever written.
I know I don’t have any obligation to come out to my parents
But i wonder if that means not allowed
Will i still call my girlfriend my best friend when we announce our engagement
WIll i spend my whole wedding night telling my parents we’re just coworkers
I watch celebrities kiss girls for an audience
Demi and Kehlani
Britney and Madonna
Only if there is someone watching
As long as my love doesn’t extend past a mans phone screen
We can only touch for a camera
We can only be lovers if there is man in our bed
when there was no one watching
We would give makeovers just to get closer to each others lips
She would lift my shirt up to paint stories on my back
She would teach me how to smoke a cigarette
Even though we’re both vegans
For our health
I’d do her math homework while she cleaned my room
We’d find my parents cheapest wine so we didnt feel guilty when we stole it
we’d make out in the bathrooms of high school parties and lock the door
She thinks i have terrible music taste but still dances with me to my favorite songs
She doesn’t sing along but i do
she would smile
I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to give myself fully
Like this
To a man
But that has never stopped them from taking it

This piece is excellent. Most love/romantic poetry becomes so flowery or unrealistic that it makes you think “wait, are we still talking about human beings here?” The biggest strength in this poem is that the reader can empathize/sympathize with the speaker, and it feels like reading a journal entry (in the best way). Oh, and the detail about recommended songs on spotify is golden, creating the perfect touch. Really, really, nice job.
