We’ve all been there at various points in our life. Something bad or unexpected happens and suddenly, we’re panicking, left to wonder, “Why is this happening to me?” It may be something as minor as a flat tire or an expensive home repair, or it may be as heartbreaking as a death. Sooner or later, all of us will face these trials and adversities in our lives. What is their purpose?
Now, you may be thinking, dear reader, that I’m going to say these trials are good and that they are beneficial to you. On the contrary, there is nothing “good” or “beneficial” from death or tragedy. It would be insensitive and inaccurate to imply otherwise. However, there are lessons of growth we CAN reap from these terrible times.
Nothing is more heartbreaking and enduring as the death of a loved one. Even through such painful times, we can weather the storm and become stronger than before. As I write this, I am still struggling with the death of my grandfather, who was more like a father to me. If there is a lesson to be learned, it isn’t one of regret or wishing I had spent more time with him. The lesson is to remember that life is fleeting and, as cliche as it may sound, we must make as many memories with the ones we love as we can.
It is arrogant and tone-deaf for those not in your shoes to imply that you are experiencing a certain trial for a “reason”. What IS important to remember is that, no matter the trial or tragedy, we can draw strength from if it we choose. Tragedy, adversity, and the trials of life are not object lessons in and of themselves. It is we who have to choose to take something positive from them as we heal.
