Our Mortal Hymn
Amazing is what it is, how a person can possibly pick up the pace so many times
When not too long ago the whisper of another aroma was creeping into your mind when all you wanted was to exist in the supermarket
But no, just that one little instance, that one small ingredient was a painful reminder
“Pick up the pace, pick up the pace” you told yourself
This hymn heard by the deepest of depths in your soul
“Breathe in deeply, let it out. This won’t last. “
“One more step forward. I can do this.” The internal hymn of the love in your heart sings a soft romance to the beautiful voices in your mind.
The voice of your mother, possibly your best friend. Those that you love so.
And then there’s him. His hymn silently existing in the dark corners of your mind
“Just leave.” one step closer.
Every time you take one step closer, you take five steps back. The hole in your chest grows deeper and deeper, wider and wider. A burning flame punching straight through your heart, allowing the apparition of intense loneliness.
The promise. The echo of the promise that was made.
Meaningless it is now. The vent and call of pain in your voice escaping your lips waiting to be heard.
Unnoticed.
Unseen.
And Ignored.
“Where are you now?” you ask inside your head expecting an answer.
Silence.
The hymn that echoes in your soul awaits to be heard. Drifting away you feel yourself. My mind. My heart. Its gone.
A silent hymn is now all that exists.
Serving as a reminder of what could have been, and what never was, and never will be. A hymn echoing in silence.
And here this mortal hymn you wish would be heard. However in your mind… it only exists.

You’re really good at setting a mood! Having the inner thoughts contradict the physical movement of the narrator helps give everything the sense of being an internal struggle, and when the silence wins out it’s made all the more powerful. It all reminds me of those stories about sea sirens luring people in, seeing to their own destruction.
