A young man was looking for the answers to the universe. He understood he enjoyed his part as human in this experience. His greatest fascination was to seek enlightenment from various angles. So, he went on an adventure.
On the top of a mountain, there lived a guru. The guru would answer 3 specific questions. Yet those who asked similar questions and discussed his answers found that he answered each of their same questions differently, yet all answers still provided truths. These truths were what they were after, and the answer he gave to one person, sometimes benefit others more effectively.
So the boy headed up the steep mountain walking on the path past large rocks, tall trees, switchbacks and finally made it to the top where the guru was.
His first question was, how do I become enlightened.
The guru laughed. “You walked all the way up this mountain, passing beautiful trees, seeing new sights and arrived here with passion in your bones just to ask me a question about enlightenment.”
“Yes.” The boy replied.
“Well. I need you to try something. Sit in your room all day. Or you can clean it. Just don’t go outside. See how you feel. If your body wants to go outside, we can both agree that the outdoors are important for your well-being.” He paused then started again. “Some people wish enlightenment to bring them joy and large amounts of seratonin and dopamine flowing through the brain from the moment they wake up to when they sleep. If anybody accomplishes this, they must not walk up my hill. I chose this hill to make myself difficult to get to. And now that I have, people come from all over to ask me their three questions until 5 p.m. Then I get to rest. I am a tourist attraction. You are my visitor.”
The young man nodded. Then went onto his next question. “How much time should I spend on the internet?”
The guru laughed. “There is no connection up here. The weather and the forest are my interweb. If you went anywhere for any given time, you would know your connection in that environment. And when you got tired, you would go home or go to a new spot. There are many different sites. There are many different webs. Then there is life, and time away from these things. It’s all happening. You’ll know what to do.”
Then the boy checked his phone and saw that there was no reception and was glad. Then he asked his third question. “What do you get from me visiting you?”
The guru laughed. “Well, I wish for you to come back and tell me about yourself next time. First they come for questions, then they tell me about themselves, then we become friends, two people navigating through life. I do not have any food or drink to share with you. That I am sorry. But after the long voyage and back down, there is a store that I own and they have warm foods and cold beverages. The hike up here is just to build your appetite and hope you find something nice at the gift shop. But please do come back. We all need visitors.”
The boy walked down the hill. He now was trying to enjoy the trees and the other people walking up. Maybe they were fools like him. Maybe they had different questions. All he knew was that at the gift shop with the food, they were genuinely friendly and enjoyed their job. He would maybe like to work there someday, but also wanted to make a name for himself.
