The other day I was talking career choices for myself with my fiancé. I know everyone at some point as a kid has done the fire fighter, police officer, ballerina, and so on as a career. I have always wanted to be a police officer.
I’ve waitressed, done drive through at McDonalds, worked at Arby’s and a whole lot more. I always go back to thinking about becoming a police officer. I never thought I would be able to because of my height. Also, with my size and the fact that I look about 12 years old, I don’t think anyone would take me serious.
Recent events caused me to think about a career that would be the best fit. Recent events being I am an at home mom, plus it takes to pay checks one from each spouse to afford bills, kids, and daily essentials. I started to think, do I want to go back to school. I liked the idea of being a counselor, a teacher, and a nurse. I keep coming back to being a cop.
After all this thought process of what I wanted verses what I would be good at doing, I came to this conclusion.
My passion is making the world a better place. Helping others by doing what I can. If I were to become a police officer, that is one way I would be able to do so. There was an officer that picked up my oldest son. Took him to Walmart with the sum of 150.00 to spend on Christmas presents. They could either by presents for the family, friends or themselves. The police officer did not sound like it was just something that they had to do every year. This is the second year that they chose to do this with our son. I have seen videos of cops stopping people with presents for their kids. I have personally seen police officers, fire fighters, and sometimes EMT’s hand out food. I was not an advantaged child. My dad was a single father who really didn’t make much. My mom was rarely in my life specially when she moved. I lived in apartments that were not in the worst neighborhood but it wasn’t in the best either. We had break in’s, shootings, cops patrolled often. The cops kept our complex safe and secure. They did it not just because it was their job, but because they cared about us kids. They were my inspiration and the reason why I wanted to become a cop.
I know no one should ever give up their dreams. You should always go for what you want to do. I shouldn’t have given up on wanting to be a police officer because of my height.
My reasons for not doing it were my height, my weight, and I did not think that anyone would take me serious as a police officer. Just because someone carries a gun, a taser, or pepper spray does not mean that they are intimidating. I don’t think I am intimidating, although some think that I am.
I realize that it doesn’t matter if people think that I am or am not intimidating. It wouldn’t be my job to intimidate, my job would be making sure that people follow the law. My job would be to protect the women who call that may have been victim of domestic violence. It is my job to check out break in’s.
Protect and Serve.
