NSSI also known as non suicidal self injury is very common from what I’ve seen. But, a lot of people don’t know that. Most people think that if someone is harming themselves its because they want to die, which isn’t always the case. For example, I used to self harm and decided to open up to someone I trusted. I tried to tell them about why I did it, but they kept cutting my words off and saying its because I want to die. After that I started questioning myself on whether I want to die or not which is idiotic now that I look back at it. Now I just let people think what they want to think because at the end of the day I know why I did it and its not because I want to die. For what ever reason anyone who does self harm (including myself) should not have anything to be afraid of. If you do have anxiety pertaining to it, its okay. You’ll eventually stop and the scars will go away. Once you’ve gotten over that stage in your life, you most likely won’t go back. Or at least I didn’t. Get or give help while you still can because you never know the reason.

I’m glad you pointed this out, because I agree that the association of self-harm with suicidal tendencies has definitely made people who do it for other reasons feel unheard and go untreated for their real problems. People also shouldn’t be ashamed of old scars, as they simply tell a story; it can be a sad story, but defeating with unhealthy coping mechanisms like self-harm is something to be proud of. It’s such a great time for you to post this too, considering we’re in such a seasonally depressive time. Thanks!
