Addiction is hard.
There’s so many different types and forms.
It comes at you without warning sometimes.
Other times you feed it and nurture it and
make it become real.
The thing you’re hooked on feels so good.
Then afterwards you feel like shit trying to
assure yourself that you’re doing the right thing.
That you’ll stop tomorrow.
You wont ever do it again.
But the next day,
you’re at it again.
You take a double dose of the very thing causing your issues.
what do you do if the one thing you cant live without,
is a person?
you cant kill it, you cant go to aa.
You just have to deal with it.
You can try to drink them away,
smoke them out of your life,
you can ignore them till they go away.
but the memory of them will remain.
and going back to those memories is a
drug you’ll never kick.

There’s so much truth to this poem. Addiction is truly a disease of the mind, and there’s so many more besides drug and alcohol. Even food addiction is a huge issue, because unlike drugs and alcohol, you have to eat.
exactly! that’s where I was coming from, I used to have a food addiction and had to have surgery to correct it. But there’s no amount of therapy, no surgery, no true solution to being addicted to a persons existence… and wanting to be with them, you can go to counseling, but their memory will always be with you. that’s pretty much where these thoughts were coming from. 🙂
Addiction is beast. The question you pose “what do you do if the one thing you can’t live without is a person?” is extremely difficult. As opposed to other addictions, a human isn’t an object that you can cast aside and “give up” especially if there are strong emotional ties to that person. I’m wonder what others have to say. Thoughtful piece!
The idea behind this piece is really interesting to mull over. I agree that people can be addictions too, and it’s true that it’s harder to kick the addiction. Like you said in the poem, you cannot erase memories so when they pop up in your head you can’t really control it. I would love to see even more writing around this idea; I think it’s something that a lot can be said about.
