Parent! What is a parent? From a young age we are taught that a parent is someone who gave you life. Who loves you and someone who you live with. Except now a days, there are so many kinds of “parents”. You have parent, grandparent, godparent, step-parent, birth parent, adopted parent and so much more. But being a parent to any child is no longer what it used to be. Times have changed things have progressed, and others have flipped flopped.
To be parent, yes one must have child. But these days, to be a parent is not just about giving life to a child. To be a parent, one must truly the child(s). I am a step-parent to two wonderful children. One boy and one girl. They are not mine biological children, they don’t have my blood or any of my DNA, so does that mean that I should not care, love or want anything to do with them? Hell no. I love spending all of days. All of my time with my kids. That is what a real parent is. A parent these days is now defined as someone who loves one child. Me I have two children who I love deeply. I have cried when they cried or were hurt, I had quite my job once when my son was severely sick and sent to the ER. I have given up so much not only for my husband, but OUR kids. I know his children are between him and his ex-wife. But My love for them and my stress and constant worry for them is true and real as ever can be.
When OUR son got sick I went to medical school to not only pursue my dream of the medical field, but to help take care of our son. To treat him and know exactly what to do. Halfway through my medical schooling our son was medically cleared of his medical condition. But through all of the testings, ER visits, Dr visits, exams, check ups and everything else in between I was always right there for him. I made time to be there for his sister my daughter as she was worried about her baby brother. Which is understandable. I have stayed up all night with both of my kids. I to this day will wake up during the night, go check on both kids and make sure that they are okay, breathing okay, and are sleeping peacefully.
Being a parent does not always mean by blood. It actually means by the one who loves. I know I am only some step-parent. But to me, my kids are mine kids. I know in my head that they are not biological children even though I wish they were. I treat them Like they are mine children. From the day I met them to the day I die and even in the after life (because I know me) I will always love and worry about my kids. They mean everything to me. They are my world. And that what being is a parent is about. The amount of love you show and give to the child. To see their faces light up with a smile of pure happiness. You can’t buy that. And you can’t fake that.
There are women out there, who cannot have children and they adopt. They are called adopted parents. It is the same thing for them as well. A parent, is one who truly loves the child. Who will do anything for their children. To make them happy and feel loved and special. Life as a parent, is not always easy. There is no handbook or Manuel on how to be a parent. Yes there are classes, but the truth is, to be a parent, it comes from within you. Not some class or book and tips on how to be better a parent. Because there is no true right or wrong way of being a parent. As long as you truly love your child like I do mine, then you are doing good as a parent. The moment you stop loving the child, their life will change, and things will no longer be the same for either of you. Every child is a miracle. Life as a parent is hard, but it is well worth the lifetime of a ride.
