We all go through depression at a certain time in our lives.
But not all of us are able to get past it. For some it causes
The feeling of loneliness, for others it causes the feeling of
Drowning in their regrets and mistakes, yet others just reach
The point where they don’t think they can take their everyday
Life. On average, adjusted for age, the annual U.S. suicide rate increased 24% between 1999 and 2014, from 10.5 to 13.0 suicides per 100,000 people, the highest rate recorded in 28 years.
The sharp blade gleamed in the moonlight, he stared at it and turned it over and over. He noticed his hands were shaking. That was what happened when you were scared about killing yourself, right? He drew in a shaky breath and laughed lightly. Raising his head, he stared at the stars burning brightly in the dark sky. And wondered why. Why did he have to kill himself? Because, he answered quietly in his mind. No one needs you anymore. His parents had just gotten a divorce a few months ago. He didn’t really mind it, since they always fought. Sometimes they actually hit each other. Sure it sucked now that they couldn’t do things together,.But his whole life changed when his mom brought in a new person to his life. Her name was Stacy, she was his tutor. She was so beautiful and cute. She wasn’t one of those girls who made you feel looked down on. He liked her, of that he was sure. And of course she liked him back… he actually had gathered the courage to tell her that he wanted to date her, he was on his way to her house when he heard the sirens. By the time he got there, it was too late. She had died from being beaten to death. He still remembered her face covered in blood. Her eyes wide open, staring up at the sky one last time. He had cried and cried. Even now he was still crying. The tears dribbled down his face and splattered the knife. He watched his tears form on the end of the blade and drip down onto his pant leg. She was gone. He had never gotten over her, he still hadn’t. His mom who was so gentle and nice, was now a raging drunk. When he had told her about his crush on Stacy she had laughed in his face, he could smell the whiskey and beer on her breath, when he got angry and said something to her, she hit him. And then hit him again. And again and again. Until he was covered in his own blood. His nose was busted and his eyes were swollen shut. The next day he noticed that two teeth were missing. He went to his dad’s house and told him what had happened. He frowned and seemed upset. The next weekend they got together, he asked her what she had done to him. They started yelling and screaming at each other. He had thought it was time to leave, they always did this, and if he got caught in the middle of it… he had started to leave. His dad had turned around and told him to stay, that they need to sort this out. And that was when she stabbed his dad in the back. He still remembered the sound he made when he fell to the side, gasping and coughing for air as she stabbed him again. He was clawing and crawling toward him, tears streaming down his face, blood painting his side and smearing on the tiled floor. When the police came they arrested her for first degree murder. Now, and now he was alone. And the tears didn’t stop. He clutched the knife tighter and wondered how it would feel to die. He remembered the dog he used to have before she died from getting hit by a truck. She was the best dog ever. He loved her to pieces. For some reason he cried even harder. His whole life was meaningless and empty. No one would miss him when he was gone, no one at all. He slowly raised the blade and looked up at the stars. He wanted to see the stars before he died. Yes, there. The big dipper, and the little dipper, and his personal favorite: Aries. Tears made his vision swam. “Goodbye…” he whispered to no one. The knife slid across his throat and the last thought he had was that he realized something, someone would miss him. Before she died, the dog had given birth to one pup, only one. He had named her Mirta. He thought it sounded cute and pretty. She would miss him… and he would miss her.
The boy slumped over and died with tears in his eyes and a sad smile on his face… in the distance a small dog barked and started howling. Its howl was hauntingly beautiful and if you listened closely, you would hear the sadness behind it…
