Disturbing Village
I can’t wrap my mind
around the things I
see and hear
children being forced
to do things children
shouldn’t have to come near
Raped sodomized
misused and abused,
many only empty shells
by the time they reach preschool
We say it takes a village
we proclaim it loud and strong
yet with eyes wide shut we
allow our babies to be wronged
Babies, just babies,
boys and girls alike
looking to us
as protectors in the night-
We cringe in disgust at the
girl of thirteen turning
tricks in a hotel
with johns she’s never seen,
while inside
she wails and she screams
“SOBEBODY HELP ME PLEASE”!
We lock our doors tight to keep
the prodigal son out- once a boy toy
for uncle Ned, who now sees
gang banging as his way out
You ask,
“what is she talking about…
who is she talking to-
“my kids are just fine-
my family’ and friends’ too”
I hope you take the blinders off
before it’s too late for
the truths you refuse
to… assimilate
may be taking place
in the bedroom

That all-caps line in the middle of the poem was a really interesting stylistic choice. It definitely drew attention. Nice.
