Nothing, she thought as she stared through the fence. Absolutely—nothing.
When her friends weren’t holding a manipulative conversation with her, Claire Matthews normally kept to herself and thought nothing of her surroundings. But on her routine route home from school, a tall chain-link fence covered with signs that read no trespassing and warning: this property is patrolled by security always caught her attention. Not a day went by that she didn’t curiously peer through the small openings in the fence, hoping to see something fascinating; however, high-reaching trees directly behind it stopped her from seeing the protected secret.
One January afternoon, a boy’s voice, shrouded in pain and desperation, cried for help from within the fence. A million possibilities raced like predators toward a single prey in her head. But none of them were comforting, for they were horrific and made her feel sick to her stomach. She felt a strong obligation to help someone in trouble—but standing in between her and the boy was an immovable barrier. Her heart was suddenly injected with panic, but she found herself anchored to the ground.
